Staff Frontend/Full Stack Engineer - AI Enablement

The role

Staff Engineer. The title means different things at different companies. At Pleo, we want our staff engineers to be in technical leadership roles.  What does that mean? While working within a team, you’ll spend a small portion of your time coding. Primarily within the AI Enablement team, helping to sprinkle intelligence (through Large Language Models, Machine Learning, etc.) to improve features and products across the Pleo platform. You will be building technology that will enable other product teams in the company to use the tools they need to apply large language models to their problem spaces to serve our customers better.

The other part of being a Staff Engineer at Pleo, we want you to be empowered to take a look across Pleo to identify, build and deliver systemic improvements to help everyone be better.  The glue between engineering teams, helping facilitate the technical vision for an area and then assisting people to move towards that vision. A great staff engineer identifies a niche that needs a champion and improves it without oversight.

We’re mostly looking for people others can admire and learn from. You’ll set the standard for the team, not just in code but also in culture.

Join our team of Pleo pioneers who thrive on scaling at pace and prioritise our customers’ needs. Help us solve complex problems with innovative solutions and a touch of magic. No expense reports. No time wasted.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable web applications and services.
  • Work closely with other product and data teams to integrate AI capabilities into our products.
  • Implement front-end interfaces and ensure seamless user experiences.
  • Develop back-end components and APIs that support AI-driven features.
  • Optimise application performance for both front-end and back-end systems.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define, architect, and build new customer-facing features.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical roadmap planning.

The nitty gritty skills needed

  • 5+ years of experience building software in a product team
  • Frontend technologies such as React/ReactNative and Javascript/Typescript
  • Backend technologies such as Node.js/Java/Kotlin
  • Relational databases such as PostgreSQL/MySQL
  • Interest or experience in AI: Application of LLMs, RAG, embeddings, vector databases, prompting, and machine learning.

What your colleagues say about you:

  • You’re curious about new methods and aren’t afraid to go against the grain.
  • You care about using the best tool for the job, with the problem coming first.
  • You’re a systems thinker who takes architectural ownership. Ownership matters to you; you can clearly articulate problems and solutions and figure out the path to an agreed-upon definition of done.
  • You’re an Enabler, building robust platforms ahead of business goals.
  • You’re an entrepreneur who knows how to discover and find opportunities where others may only see problems.

Why join us?

Working at Pleo means you're working on something very exciting: the future of work. Our mission is to help every company go beyond the books. Pleo itself means ‘more than you’d expect’, and it’s been the secret to our success over the last 8 years. So it’s only fitting that we’d pass this philosophy onto our customers to help them make the most of their finances.

We think company spending should be delegated to all employees and teams, that it should be as automated as possible, and that it should drive a culture of responsible spending. Finance teams shouldn’t be siloed from the rest of the organisation – they should work in unity with marketing, sales, IT and everyone else.

Speaking of working in unity, our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo. We have four core values, the first of which is ‘champion the customer’, which means we address real pain points that businesses face. Next up is ‘succeed as a team’, which highlights how our strength lies in our diversity and trust in each other. We also ‘make it happen’ by taking bold decisions and following through to deliver results. Last but not least, we ‘build to scale’, creating lasting solutions that address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s needs.

So, in a nutshell, that's Pleo. Today we are a 850+ team, from over 100 nations, sitting in our Copenhagen HQ, London, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Montreal and Lisbon offices —and quite a few full-time remotes in 35 other countries! Being HQ'd out of Copenhagen means we're inspired by things like a good work-life balance. If you don't work in the office with us, we'll help you set up the best remote setup possible and make sure you still have time to connect with your team.
